    Exchange your driver’s license

Exchanging and registering your driving license in Portugal – Avoid problems on the road

When you emigrate to Portugal, it is not only important to import your vehicle correctly, but also to ensure that you continue to drive with a valid driver’s license. Although your Dutch driving license remains valid, you are obliged to register your driving license with the Instituto da Mobilidade e dos Transportes (IMT) within 60 days of your registration in Portugal. This prevents problems and ensures that you comply with Portuguese legislation.

After registering with the IMT you will receive proof of registration, which you must always carry with you when driving in Portugal. Remember: although your driver’s license remains valid until its expiration date, failure to comply with registration requirements can result in significant fines.

Furthermore, if you are under 18 years old, you should know that Portuguese law requires drivers to be at least 18 years old to drive a vehicle, regardless of whether you have already obtained a driver’s license in the Netherlands.

Do you want to be sure that everything is arranged correctly and on time? Let us help you with the registration of your driving license and other administrative matters, so that you can enjoy the Portuguese roads without worries.
